Marrakech
On a Marrakech city break as you go through the alleyways and souks (markets) of Marrakech, especially through the Medina (Old City) you could almost think you had been transported to an ancient world. This ancient city has many visitors returning every year captivated by the charm and unique atmosphere in Marrakech. The Medina especially holds this ancient charm, and nestling right in its centre is the Djemaa el-Fna. This is the cities square where everything appears to happen, from meetings to trade. Amongst all of this bustling atmosphere and historical culture, the modern section of Marrakech boasts luxury hotels perfect for a city break in Marrakech, as well as shops, banks and streets that are full with motor scooters.
The rich historical heritage of Marrakech dates back to 1062, when it was founded by Youssef bin Tachfine of the Almoravide dynasty. His son then brought in architects and craftsmen to design the palces, baths, mosques and subterranean water system, some of which still survive today. At the same time the City Walls were built from the red mud of the surrounding plains, and the snow-covered peaks of the High Atlas Mountains form the perfect backdrop to a city break in Marrakech.
A Marrakech city break would not be complete without exploring the city. A great way to explore the city is by horse-drawn carriage, known as caleches. However, to discover the sights and smells of the city, especially the Medina’s souks (markets) is to go on foot. In doing this you throw yourself into the bustling streets where various craftsmen and trades people show their wares – from perfume to leather and cloth, and all are sold at reasonable prices, especially if you indulge in the Moroccan culture of bargaining.
